The Bangladesh Institute of Management (BIM) was established in 1961 as the Management Development Center under a project named "East Pakistan Management Development, Supervisory and Instructor Training Centre." This project was initiated through a tripartite agreement between the Pakistani government, the United Nations, and the ILO. The project commenced under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Social Welfare of the then East Pakistan on January 1, 1961. In December 1963, the project was handed over to the regional government of East Pakistan.

On July 1, 1970, under the East Pakistan Government Educational and Training Institutions Ordinance, 1961, the Management Development Center was granted autonomy as an institution of self-government. It started offering a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Personnel Management in 1966.

Following the independence in 1971, the institute was tasked with developing human resources for the new nation. With the majority of its clients coming from the public sector, the institute played a crucial role in training members of the Industrial Management Service (IMS).

By the early 1990s, with the opening up of the economy, infrastructural changes, and rapid development in the private sector, there was a growing demand for skilled human resources. In response, the BIM underwent restructuring and started offering postgraduate diploma programs in various disciplines, including Marketing Management, Financial Management, and Computer Science.

As the demand for training and postgraduate programs increased, the focus of BIM shifted towards these areas.
